Many thanks to Roger & Tony for their efforts in applying teak oil to all the bellwheels this week. And the small matter of taking up the old carpet in preparation for the new floorcovering.

What I meant to say in last posting was: Wonder when the first booking for 2019 will come in.

Wedding Bells are certainly popular at Saltaire. Of the fourteen weddings booked so far for 2017, at least ten have requested bells. Even more interestingly, seven weddings already signed up for 2018 and all have requested ringing. From past experience we know it's likely that there'll be more requests for both years still to come. H'mm, I wonder when the first dates for 2018 will be notified?

On Friday 6th January 2017 it was the day to tackle the dreaded loose clapper on the 5th bell. Its castellated nut had already defied WD40 and small spanners. A bellhanger had been called upon, and the intrepid tower captain was there to assist. More WD40 was applied before the mighty jaws of Stillson wrenches were applied to the nut on the outside and the clapper shaft on the inside. Those of a delicate disposition should stop reading now, as language was also expended! At last, the nut yielded and the clapper removed in triumph. New leather washers were fitted and copper grease applied before re-attaching the nut and tightening. All's well again and the clapper has ceased to turn in its mounting. Thanks to Malcolm for his expertise.

The bells did indeed ring out for the Annual Candlelight Carol Service yesterday thanks to valued assistance from Simon and Helen Kemp (along with a culminating chime from Finlay)!
